What is CBD oil for Cats?
Cannabidiol, or CBD, is an extracted substance from the hemp plant.
Unlike the main psychoactive compound THC, CBD does not get you high.
As studies suggest its use for pain management and as a potential treatment for conditions such as epilepsy, anxiety, neurological disorders, and more, CBD is currently a very popular topic. If you have a cat, you might also be interested in the fact that CBD can benefit your furry friend as well!
How can CBD oil help your Cat?
Despite a growing body of evidence of the positive effects and potential applications of CBD, the field of medical cannabis research remains fairly new. Institutions are finally starting to accept that a previously demonized substance actually has a wide range of therapeutic applications. This is why there are only a few in vivo studies of CBD in cats. However, there are a number of anecdotal and preliminary reports supporting its therapeutic action.
Some of the problems that CBD can relieve in cats include:
• Loss of appetite
• Lack of energy
There are also more serious health conditions that cat owners have reported seeing good results from when administering CBD oils. This includes ailments common in cats such as arthritis, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and asthma, conditions where inflammation is often the root cause. CBD is widely known for its anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties, which help fight both the causes and symptoms of different disorders.
In humans, CBD is used to treat seizures, such as those suffered by patients with a rare form of epilepsy called Dravet syndrome. There is evidence that CBD is also effective in reducing seizures in cats.
How to dosage CBD oil for Cats
Cats are obviously smaller than humans, which means they’ll normally need a much lower dose of CBD than we do.
If you are purchasing a CBD oil product made specifically for cats, be sure to read the dosage recommendations that come with the product. You can also use CBD oils designed for humans, as long as you make sure you are using a low dose.
According to some vets, 0.1-0.5 mg of CBD per kg for your cat is an ideal dose. Individual doses may vary depending on the specific conditions your cat is suffering from, among other factors. Remember: the best can sometimes be the enemy of the good. It’s always best to start with low doses to see how your cat is responding first.
Be aware that CBD does not normally work instantly. It can take several days or weeks before you see the effects on your cat. So when administering CBD, be patient and consistent, observe your cat carefully so that you can determine the optimal dose over time.
In general, it is a good idea to wait a week or two before increasing the dosage. Keep doing this until you see the effect
So Is CBD Safe For Cats?
