What dog health problems can CBD oil treat?
Although there is no definitive scientific data on the use of CBD in the treatment of dogs, there is scattered evidence from dog owners that it can treat pain, especially neuropathic pain, and help control seizures.
According to Dr. Klein, CBD oil is also used for its cardiac benefits, anti-inflammatory properties, anti-nausea effects, appetite stimulation, anti-anxiety effects, and possible anti-cancer effects, although there is no conclusive data on this use.
The AKC Canine Health Foundation (CHF) is sponsoring a Colorado State University Biomedical Sciences study investigating the use of CBD oil in treatment-resistant epileptic dogs.
The CHF hopes this will be the first study to provide scientific data on the use of CBD in dogs with this condition.
Potential side effects of CBD in dogs
Although there is no scientific data on the side effects of using CBD in dogs, there are potential side effects based on how CBD oil affects humans. Use the right dose to minimize potential side effects.
1. Dry mouth: research has shown that CBD oil can reduce saliva production. In dogs, this would manifest as increased thirst.
2. Hypotension: high doses of CBD oil have been known to cause a temporary drop in blood pressure. Even if the drop is small, you may feel dizzy for a moment.
3. Drowsiness: dog owners have used CBD oil to treat anxiety. The sedative effects of CBD can also cause mild drowsiness, especially when higher doses are used.
Risks of Using CBD Oil for Dogs
Although it’s not only a benefit for using CBD oil for dogs, there are also risks of using CBD for dogs. The American Food and Drug Administration has not yet approved CBD oil and has not issued a dosing chart. Therefore, no one knows the correct size dosage. Any supplement or medication carries the risk of a reaction. Always start out with a small amount and then examine the effects.
